Frank, Jacob

Frank, Jacob
(1726–91)
   Sect Founder.
Frank was born Jankiev Lebowicz of Jewish parents. He was influenced by the Donmeh cult of Turkey – a group of Jews who had followed the false messiah Shabbetai Zevi into Islam. Frank seems to have believed that he was a reincarnation of Shabbetai Zevi and also the Second Person of the Trinity. After a debate with traditional Jews, Frank and his followers were baptised into the Catholic Church. However, he still allowed himself to be worshipped as the Messiah and was imprisoned for a time. His followers were said to indulge in licentious orgies and the cult spread from Poland to Bohemia and Germany. It had died out by the middle of the nineteenth century.
